everyone in my class hates Catherine in A Farewell to Arms. I don’t really get it. I think she’s incredibly real. She has felt all the hardships of war and understands how fragile life is and she just wants to be happy, and make those around her happy. She doesn’t complicate things and lives in this world that will keep her safe, so if everything does fall apart, she is protected in this happiness, no matter how faked it is. But she also has this sort of sense about the world. She actually thinks and understands things. She is aware of all of her choices. Henry really has no idea what’s going on in the world. but she, i feel, really just gets it. after everything that has happened to her, she just wants to be happy and make the most of everything, without getting bogged down by the sadness of war and life.
she’s not whiney, submissive, and crazy. She’s got a lot going for her.
